Exfoliating And The Amazing Results

Every time I speak to someone about their beauty regime and all their favourite things to do which they consider important, they always seem to miss out one important thing!

That’s a good, well formulated, non irritating exfoliator !

But what can it really do?

Well we know it makes our skin feel much smoother and silky soft, but that’s not really a true benefit for skin.

Exfoliation can:

– reveal more youthful, radiant skin over time
– stimulate cell turnover, so your skin produces newer and healthier cells
– boosts collagen producing plumper skin
– increases absorption for the products to follow!
– reduces effects of sun damage, scarring, and blotchiness

Did you know how much more affective a chemical exfoliant is more so than a physical?

There are many options of chemical exfoliants to choose from these days!

Some of the best for normal to dry skin are: glycolic, lactic and citric acid

For oily and acne prone: salicylic acid and other bha’s are preferred as they can break down thru to oil in the pores and reduce irritation and severe redness.

Amazing stuff!

I adore chemical exfoliants and if you don’t have one in your regime at present, I recommend finding a good one!

Look for
-fragrance free
-slow release
-combination of other beneficial ingredients like vitamins a + c + e
-emollients to moisturise
-other skin loving ingredients
-avoid essential oils!

Get exfoliating everyone 🙂

Do You Need A Toner?

Many people question whether they need a toner/lotion in their skincare regime .

I personally prefer not to, as I don’t want to add too many steps into my regime,

But toners can be an extra step that you could greatly benefit from.

What are toners for, you ask?

-reduces pore size
-balances acid mantle on the skin
-removes excess cleanser
-can give skin an extra dose of antioxidants and beneficial ingredients

Something I find quite often when I look at a toners formula is that they are very cheap when it comes to a good amount of ingredients , and after all, you don’t want to pay 30 to 40 dollars for a bottle of water and some glitter in it.. Right ?

So here are some things to look for in a toner !

-antioxidants are a must! And there should be lots if you are going to tone at all
-avoid alcohol as the 1st or second ingredient (mostly alcohol denat)
-look for skin identical ingredients such as glycerin , or cholesterol for better value
-make sure it suits YOUR skin type so it balances your skins oil flow/dryness evenly.
-an exfoliating toner (a.h.a or b.h.a) can be a great addition to an oily skins regime

So whether you need a toner in your regime is really up to , and whether your skin needs something extra or you need to refine more oil after cleansing!

Choose wisely and if it smells like last weekends bottle of vodka … Don’t use it!

What’s your favourite toner ? 🙂

Sunscreen Hall Of Fame!

When it comes to sun protection and wearing an S.P.F, my friends could tell you that I am crazy about it!

From the moment I hop in my car, the glove box is opened and that spf is getting on my hands before you know it !

Its important to never forget your neck and to always do your arms (and hands) which we usually forget

It doesn’t matter whether it is winter or summer because the sun will always manage to penetrate the layers of our skin and cause ageing.

So the BEST thing we could possibly do is be vigilant about sun protection EVERY day of the year!

The reason I’m so funny about protecting myself from the sun, is because it is doing so much more damage than we could ever imagine.

The way we usually find out is by reaching our 40’s and finding that we already have spots like a leopard, skin like a snake and hands that look 20 years older than our time!

So still convinced sun protection isn’t an issue ?

Just remember that a whopping 90% of premature skin ageing is a result of SUN DAMAGE.

In addition to these little sun facts (no need to cancel your trip to the Bali or the Bahamas!)

I have my 3 favourite reliable Sun Care superstars to present to you!

I have chosen these products as they…

-have broad spectrum protection (anti-ageing and burning )
-fragrance free (less irritation)
-limited alcohol (non-drying, less free radical damage)
-some provide a bunch of antioxidents
-feel sophisticated and elegant on the skins surface.
-all have different textures to suit your skin type !
-work well under make-up
-SPF-30+.

MY TOP 3 FAV’S…
(Pricing is Australian)

3. “Shiseido- Gentle Sun Protection Lotion (for sensitive skin and babies)$52

This product is incredibly light, super smooth, feels very silky which means great under make up and best of all uses the gentle mineral sunscreens of zinc oxide and titanium dioxide ! This means less irritation and better sun protection against pigmentation!
I love that this is so light even an oily skin can use it ! It leaves a very very light white cast ( which disappears after a couple of minutes ) I have to say I haven’t seen a mineral sunscreen have such a clear like finish! So I put this in my top FAV’s. this is spf is also great when you need to reapply thru out the day as it isn’t heavy enough to be a problem, as reapplying can cause break outs if its too heavy!

2. “Invisible Zinc- Tinted Daywear”-$35

This spf product uses gentle mineral protection of zinc oxide alone, so the safety of this spf is amazing, not to mention for a sensitive skin, it is almost impossible to be allergic to this product !
The reason I rate this so highly is mainly due to the fact that it has such a nice tint to it, hiding the white cast that zinc typically leaves on the skin,
It leaves such a beautifully light coverage and hides any redness or uneven skin tone and leaves a Dewey and very healthy look on the skin. Keeping in mind tho, this product is for anyone with dry/normal skin! It does leave quite a tacky finish, so if you suffer from excess oil production it might not be for you ! It has two colours available,
The light color suits most skin tones from pale to medium and slightly tanned, and the medium shade suits just over slightly tanned to medium dark skin tones .
Love this product !

1. “Clinique- Super City Block” -$36

The second I started using this product a long time ago (I was given a sample) I just fell in love with the texture! It spreads easily, blends quite well, and does a great job of hiding a white cast ! This uses titanium dioxide and zinc oxide to provide gentle and effective protection against sun damage, this is formulated so well that it can be used as a moisturiser ALONE, it has numerous antioxidants to enhance its protection factor , and will be all you need to soldier thru your day with anti ageing protection! Now that’s the kind of spf I want!
Many spfs leave out the antioxidants and extra’s as its something most people don’t notice, but Clinique generally go above and beyond to set themselves apart! This product evens out your skintone pretty well and works for a oily/combination/normal skin.
Once it sets, the oiliness basically goes away and sets to a slightly Matte finish. Never remove this baby from the shelves, pleaaaase!!

Thank you for reading…

Now I want to know.. What is your favourite, can’t live without S.P.F product?

Ben 🙂

The scary truth about Men’s skincare!

Being a skincare fanatic, and also being a male, I am well aware of the marketing traps and have often found myself falling for the mens lines and product offerings in the past.

I have spoken before about how irritation in the skin, no matter how little, causes collagen and elastin deterioration, and how it prevents the skin from repairing itself and leads to permanently sensitized skin and possibly rosacea!

-I have to begin by saying. NOT ALL mens skincare lines have bad ingredients, but I have decided to write this article because more often than not many company’s are producing weak, dumbed down versions of the woman’s formulations, when a mans skin needs just as much protection as a woman’s!

So the real question is… Does a mans skin differ from a woman’s skin?

Research shows that a mans skin is generally thicker than a woman’s skin, resulting in more active sebaceous glands (oil).
But that doesn’t mean that a mans skin needs anything different than a woman’s (ingredients wise), it just means that the texture of the product should be different depending on your skin type .

i.e. If you have oily skin, use a light lotion, if you have dry skin, use a cream!

NOT ALL men have oily skin, my skin is normal and I shouldn’t use oil free products! My skin needs moisture and will age if I don’t provide it with such, the same goes for every other man.

Many mens skin care lines also miss out on the one important anti-aging ingredient. You guessed it. SPF!!
This is quite common as men don’t like the greasy feel on their face that spf often provides.
They like the feel of a weightless finish with a masculine and earthy smell.

Some drawbacks in mens ranges to look out for!

-weak formulas with tiny amounts of active ingredients.

-lacking antioxidants .

-strongly fragranced like mens cologne.

-products containing irritating essential oils such as peppermint, eucalyptus, menthol, camphor, spearmint. These oils smell amazing but do nothing but harm for a mans skin, accelerating ageing.

-lacking sufficient UVA protection from the sun.

-hardly go above and beyond.

-most products are VERY high in
alcohol as men love a non greasier finish.

-some of the products contain ingredients which temporarily tighten the skin, damaging elastin.

I have found many mens skincare lines make the same mistakes with their formulations!

Are there any mens lines I don’t bag? Well yes actually!

“Lab Series For Men” is a fantastic line of skincare aimed at men (but woman can use too!)
It contains heaps of antioxidants, spf, vitamins A, C and E and many more ingredients to keep our skin well protected from environmental assaults! ( fragrance free as well! )

So if your man (or yourself) MUST use a skincare in packaging designed for men than this is one line to definitely consider!

There is no available evidence stating that a mans skin needs any thing different than a woman’s skin. We all need as much protection as we can get, just like our diet can do with as many nutrients as possible!

So next time you take your hubby to the cosmetics counters with you for a new face cream/cleanser, avoid the mens lines and lead him to your favourite counter and make sure he is getting the same gold treatment for his skin that you are getting for yours !

Take care x

Ben 🙂

Finding the RIGHT moisturiser for you!

Finding the perfect moisturiser can be one of the most challenging, aggravating, confusing and mind boggling things, as the beauty industry COUNTLESS amounts of brands (let alone products!) to choose from!

We also tend to be brand nazis and don’t even realise it, leaning towards a particular brand because our mother used it or because we have seen it lying around in the bathroom at some point because our sister (or brother) once used it as well!

It’s important when on that big search for an effective (and good valued) moisturiser that we are seeing the big picture, and not just the pretty box it comes in ( I must say I am guilty for falling into those marketing traps as well haha

First of all…

SUNSCREEN, I can’t stress enough, this is something people STILL don’t seem to worry about, regardless of the huge amount of research available stating that SUN DAMAGE is the number 1 ageing factor, so at LEAST apply an SPF15!

The sun breaks down collagen and causes hyper pigmentation (sun spots), and we all know about skin cancer! You may even see these effects before you even reach your late 20s! Prevention is most definitely the key.

Look for U.V.A protection in your spf moisturisers (to get antiageing protection)

Ingredients such as : titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, avobenzone, oxybenzone.

Antioxidents (and plenty!) if you are even going to bother putting anything on your face it is important to consider how many antioxidants you are actually getting for your money in the product.

Ingredients such as: pomegranate, soybean, grapeseed, and vitamins a+c+e to name a few! These put up a safeguard for your skin to be protected better (and can put a bubble around your spf to do its job better!.)

Choosing a product with A+C AND E together combined, ensures recycled all day protection . 😉

Cell transmitters, these ingredients are very helpful in a product as they help the cells to communicate with each other so everything in the deeper layers of your skin function better and to continue to work as they should!

Look for vitamin b3 (niacanimide) as this is the most well researched ingredient to do this job !

Extra touches…
Some moisturisers go above and beyond to show that they are far superior than the other choices (considering they have included all of the above already!)

Most of these brands include skin identical ingredients, such as hyaluronic acid and glycerin, these bind water on the surface of our skin holding back the ageing process significantly.

Remember to look out for the placement of the ingredients on the formulas list (read every product) before considering it!

If you see these ingredients at the top of the list.. Then It consists mostly of those ingredients!
If its at the very bottom… It’s quite possibly not even worth considering.

There are a lot of cheeky company’s ripping us off!

Lets find out for ourselves and give our skin what it really deserves and more 😉

Take care x

It takes a lot of trial and error to find the perfect lip balm that nourishes for hours without wearing off too soon!

This lip balm is loaded with emollients, a few antioxidants including vitamin E, and best of all…
Broad spectrum sun protection of SPF30 , I am yet to find another multi tasking lip product such as this one, without including irritants like peppermint and menthol.

There are also a few other shades of tint available

Well done Ella Bache

Winter Warmers!

When it comes to body products.. I am completely obsessed!

I always look for soap FREE products with beautiful scents to indulge in! Now it must be said first of all, when it comes to my body I am not as anal about applying fragrance as our body’s can usually handle alot more than our precious faces!

Anyways, now that winter is here (in Australia that is
We should be using highly hydrating creamy body cleansers and scrubs!

Here are just a few of my favourite winter superstars!

1. “Turkish Delight Shower Smoothie- Lush”-

This gorgeous shower cream smoothie that I stumbled across today ( From Lush ) is just amazingly soft and nourishing to the body, it cleanses effectively without leaving a greasy residue!

I love that you can cover your body in this stuff before getting into a bath as well! It smells beautifully pure and pleasant, perfect for a cold winters night to cocoon yourself in!

2. “Soy Milk and Honey Body Polish- Kiehls”-

This scrub is amazingly abrasive for anyone that wants a really effective scrub!
Perfect for winter and contains polyethylene beads as the scrubbing agent.
The BEST thing about this product is that the harshness of the beads is balanced out by the nourishment of the jojoba butter and the Shea butter! This scrub is worth every penny as it definitely isn’t something you could just make at home !
Love it

3. “Green Tea & Honey Drops- Elizabeth Arden”-

Now if there was one body butter that could deeply moisturise even the dries of skins, it would be this one!

This product is LOADED with every kind of state of the art emollients to keep your body feeling more than content! If that couldn’t get any better it also has REAL drops of honey that break open and distribute evenly over your skin to keep it even more hydrated for longer.

This is your best friend for winter! Not to mention you will go to bed smelling of green tea and honey!

Take Care!
